May Profile: Cara Hutchens

Cara has grown to become a passionate outdoorswoman but was not born into a family of fieldsports enthusiasts. Her fresh air activities as a young girl involved lot of time hiking or sailing; she admits that a pair of oars was one of the early recreational tools she was issued with and there is a crackly cine film of this Edinburgh lass learning to row a dinghy in South Queensferry harbour at the age of 3.

The first opportunity to hold a firearm presented itself to her at the age of 17. She quickly progressed from firing a .22 rifle at paper targets and tin cans to rabbits. Then in 1989, not long after her 18th Birthday, she bagged her first red stag. Shotgun shooting and fly-fishing quickly followed as integral parts of the pursuits enjoyed by Cara who was living on the beautiful Isle of Jura at that time.

In the mid-nineties, Cara moved from Jura to Caithness and has been involved in various roles on Scottish sporting estates in a range of locations ever since. For over a decade she has been the Director of her own Company and is the only female full-time independent Sporting Agent in Scotland, if not the UK...

International Hunting Scotland organises bespoke days and packages for wing shooting, fishing and deerstalking. The Company organises single days, events and a range of multi-stop trips for clients throughout Scotland, the rest of the UK and beyond.

Beyond her professional endeavours, she is a firm advocate of introducing young folks to the joys of the outdoors. During her time as a member of BASC (British Association for Shooting & Conservation) Council, Cara was also the Chair of a youth trust which has amission of education youngsters about nature, fieldcrafts and country pursuits.

In her leisure moments, Cara can be found with a rod or gun in hand, whether exploring the UK or venturing abroad. Because she has a profound passion for promoting tourism and countrysports in Scotland, a global presence at hunting shows and a long-established network of global outfitters and agent partners, Cara Hutchens stands as a trailblazer in the fieldsports community.
