November Profile: Georgina Preston

Growing up in Somerset, I was surrounded by rural countryside and hunting was a big part of my local community, which I found solace in when I didn't particularly enjoy my school environment. My grandfather enjoyed photography, so cameras were always around and it was something I loved to do, so it was a natural progression to start photographing my passion; hunting. It's my enigmatic, atmospheric photography of this nice subculture that I am best known for, and what has led me to America, Canada, and Pakistan to document horses and hounds in far corners of the world. It also attracted invitations to photograph riding holidays in places such as Argentina, Egypt, Kyrgyzstan, and Kenya to name a few. There's something about the connection between man, horse and hound that is a unique and timeless subject.

The high standard of elegant tailoring and vintage clothes worn out hunting certainly influenced my interest in fashion, and subsequently fashion photography, which in turn is reflected in my equestrian and travel photography. Many of my hunting photos look editorial, which I think is what sets it apart from many other people covering the same subject. My fieldsports imagery has attracted clients and work such as shooting campaigns for Purdey, my equestrian work meaning I was commissioned to photograph Christy Turlington for Carolina Herrera, two brilliant opportunities.

Photographing hunting and fieldsports in general has been an amazing way to build a portfolio that encompasses a beautiful blend of landscape, community, fashion, in all weathers. It's resulting in gritty, honest photographs that really translate to the viewer in an authentic fashion. I am so grateful for the foundation that growing up amongst field sports has given me.
